Irrelevant changing-state vibrotactile stimuli disrupt verbal serial recall: implications for theories of interference in short-term memory

چکیده

What causes interference in short-term memory? We report the novel finding that immediate memory for visually-presented verbal items is sensitive to disruption from task-irrelevant vibrotactile stimuli. Specifically, a visual sequence disrupted by concurrently presented of vibrations, but only when entails change (when “jumps” between two hands). The impact on visual-verbal serial recall was similar magnitude auditory stimuli (Experiment 1). Performance missing item task, requiring item-identity rather than item-order, unaffected changing-state 2), as with Moreover, predictability did not modulate effect, arguing against an attention-capture conceptualisation 3). Results support view produced conflict incompatible, amodal serial-ordering processes (interference-by-process) representational codes (interference-by-content).

Children's serial recall errors: implications for theories of short-term memory development.

Three experiments examined developmental changes in serial recall of lists of 6 letters, with errors classified as movements, omissions, intrusions, or repetitions. In Experiments 1 and 2, developmental differences between groups of children aged from 7 to 11 years and adults were found in the pattern of serial recall errors. The errors of older participants were more likely to be movements tha...

Retroactive effects of irrelevant speech on serial recall from short-term memory.

The authors report 5 serial-recall experiments. In 4 of the 5 experiments, they show that irrelevant sound (IS) has a retroactive effect on material already in memory. In Experiment 1, IS presented during a filled retention interval had a reliable effect on list recall. Four further experiments, 3 of which used retroactive IS, showed that IS continued to-have an effect on recall following a lon...

Phonological similarity and the irrelevant speech effect: implications for models of short-term verbal memory.

Three experiments studied the interaction between irrelevant speech and phonological similarity within both the remembered and the irrelevant auditory material. Phonological similarity within the remembered list impaired performance in both baseline and irrelevant speech conditions, whereas phonological similarity between the remembered and ignored irrelevant items did not influence performance...

Semantic Networks and Order Recall in Verbal Short-Term Memory

In a recent paper, Acheson, MacDonald, and Postle (2011) made an important but controversial suggestion: They hypothesised that a) semantic information has an effect on order information in short-term memory (STM) and b) that order recall in STM is based on the level of activation of items within the relevant long-term memory (LTM) network. However, verbal STM research typically has led to the ...
